Blog Post 1: Green Building

When talking about land, there are a variety of topics you can talk about based on how it affects it the environment. For example, you can talk about growing foods, building cities, roads, urban sprawl, forests, wilderness, wildfires, agriculture, our food supply, food security, GMOs, CFOs, effects of agriculture, like pesticide and fertilizer run-off, human health issues related to food and the list goes on. However, a big thing I see in the world today related to land is building cities, roads, and buildings. As we all know, this can be very detrimental to the environment and to our health as a whole. To build cities, and roads you have to cut down trees, and this is cutting down our oxygen and releasing all the CO2 the trees hold, out into the air. Because of the necessities of humans, saying we have to stop building cities and roads is extreme and unrealistic. However, based on green sustainability news article, they have discovered a way to implement “Green Building” as a way to make sure building these cities aren’t extremely harmful to the environment. “LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) is a rating system designed to evaluate the environmental performance of a building and encourage sustainable design” (Green/Sustainability). LEED Gold makes sure that the building that was built uses 25% less energy and 11% less energy than non-LEED building. LEED Gold also makes sure that the building has 19% lower maintenance cost, 34% less greenhouse gas emissions, and more. Implementing this little change can help the environment in tremendous ways over the years.

I totally agree with this because these green buildings will use less energy and aren’t extremely harmful to the environment. By building roads and these cities, your destroying habitats and may put these wildlife populations at risk and may have some of the wildlife go extinct. By having a degree in biology this would make me happy knowing that these buildings wouldn’t be taking our oxygen and maybe preserve the wildlife population.
ReplyDeleteYes, so much possible when we start reshaping our buildings to match the environment. How popular is LEED? How much does it shift immediate costs?
