Post 3: Trees

Image
Nia Mallette       For this post I wanted to take a step back and discuss the more obvious effects of land. As we all know trees are a huge part of land. “They give us oxygen, store carbon, stabilize the soil and give life to the world’s wildlife” (Royal Parks). These are things we should have already heard or known, if you haven’t you just gained some knowledge. However, what humans fail to realize is that trees are essential to life. Without oxygen we don’t live. Without the animals having a place to stay, they don’t live and we eventually won’t eat. Also, by cutting down trees we release all the carbon dioxide stored in the trees over millions of years and this is extremely detrimental to us. This chain reaction can go on and on, but it seems like we are negligent to the brutal reality of what we do when we cut down trees.       In my opinion, I believe that this problem is because of our society today. People rather have nice shiny, bright l...

(Post 3) The Outcome of the Wildfires in Australia

Image
By: Casey Williams    The wildfires in Australia are insanely terrible and it has shocked America. Nearly 18 million acres of land has been burned, most of it being bush land, forests and national parks. With billions of animals actually dying from the wildfires. Which were birds, reptiles, mammals, and more. In the article, it said that it could be nearly a billion animals that died from this. Its hard to actually realize that. That means that some animals are at a great threat of being extinct and some already have reached that because of the wildfires. Some animals like the koalas and kangaroos, were primarily killed directly by the fires. For an example, by being incinerated in flames or choking on the smoke.    Looking at the picture to the right, this koala is recovering from burns. It looks absolutely terrible to me and how crazy this wildfire really was. It really sad to see that actually happening to them. Luckily the Koalas and the kangaroos were not i...

blog 3, deforestation. Alessandro

Image
Lacerti Alessandro Deforestation in the Usa As you can guess from the word, deforestation means clearing of  forest by humans. Estimates of deforestation traditionally are based  on the area of forest cleared for human use, including removal of the  trees for wood product and for croplands. Sometimes fires change the structure of the forest dramatically. 75% of forests have disappeared since 1600.     Causes   As always, one cause is money : people who live in forested areas  receive offers of money to let their land logged. Even an area that  doesn't have a lot of trees can produce a lot of wood for experienced  loggers. Now the landowner has a lot of cleared acres, that can sell to developers for new housing complexes. Another cause is agriculture : a landowner can use the cleared land to plant crops. Also invasive plants and insect can be a cause of deforestation,  because they kill the trees Effects of D...

(post 2) Conservation Lands Are A Must

Image
By: Casey Williams   Conservation Areas are a way conserving land and life. They are protected areas not only helps conserve the natural landscape and geography, but also the wildlife that lives there. This article is very accurate and really trustworthy as in telling us what these areas actually do for the environment. Protecting the wildlife and preserving it. Earth's natural resources include air, minerals, plants, soil, water, and wildlife. These things are what we need to care for and to protect for them to continue on for future years. These lands are very important to me because they are preserving the wildlife and making sure those species that are at risk of extinction can get taken care of.    By introducing the Conservation Area's, they established the U.S. Endangered Species Act in 1973. Generating this was to protect the extinction pressures. "Currently, more than 26,500 species are estimated to be at risk of extinction, though the exact number is difficu...

Post 2: Wildfires

Image
Wildfires are a huge part of the “land” section because of how detrimental they are to land. For those of you who may not know, wildfires are a large destructive fire that spread quickly around woodland or brush. Wildfires can be caused by many reasons. They can start naturally.  Fires are usually started by unusually long-lasting hot lightning bolts. Hot lightening  has currents with less voltage than cold currents, but these occur for a longer period of time. However, 85 percent of wildfires are caused by humans in the United States. If you read my last blog post, you would see the pattern of how we, humans mess up our own environment or our own land. Some examples of how humans cause wildfires is  from campfires left unattended, the burning of debris, equipment use and malfunctions, negligently discarded cigarettes, and intentional acts of arson. At the end of the day, a lot of stuff that happens can be prevented if we just be careful and pay attention to what we do...

Contaminated soil - post 2

Image
Da’Viona Bonner Have you ever seen a local store or restaurant  that’s has a sign saying “ sorry we aren’t serving Roman lettuce due to a recall linked to ...” The reason we have those recalls on our food is due to contaminated soil. The biggest areas of soil contamination are located in urban areas and industrial sites. If you are located in those areas you should do a soil test for safety precautions. The most common contamination in the urban area are  pesticides, radon, lead and many more which is caused by our Activities. Some people think that the only way to come in contact with contaminated soil is thru our food but that is only one way. Other ways we can come in contact with contaminated soil is by breathing the dust, through skin contact, and ingesting soil. For example, if you have a pet and take them outside for a walk and they come in contact with contaminated soil and you go back inside and decide to play /pet with them then your breathing in and...

Blog 2. Italy’s Land

Image
Lacerti Alessandro  I want to show you the use of the Land in my country, Italy. First of all, I have to tell you that Italy is the third agricultural economy in Europe. As we can see in the article linked below, on 291 square kilometers of surface (without rivers,lakes..), the 43% (it means 125 square kilometers) is agricultural land. But, what does agricultural land mean ? Well, it simply means that the land is always used for crops or pastures . Of course, land that is abandoned is excluded from the 43%! As I said in the “Blog 1, the USA’s use of land”, urbanization is taking over agriculture ! Why? Because more or less 50 years ago, the percentage of agricultural land was 71%! Now the 30% of that agricultural land is used for industries and other commercial activities. Even if it seems that the agricultural land is reducing, in Italy we have fantastic lanscapes with hills and I love spending time there! if you go to Italy, try to visit also Euganean hills...

Blog 1. The USA’s use of Land.

Image
Lacerti Alessandro  The article I’d like to talk about has been written by Dave Merril and Lauren Leatherby  in July 2018.  They refer to data published by the US department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service . I want to show this picture of the division of the Land among six categories:  Pasture , Forest , Cropland , Special Use , Miscellaneous and Urban As we can clearly see, most of the USA’s land is used for Range (48%).  Is this a good propor tion?  The use of the land can seem good, but in a few year the urbanization will take over agriculture. d ata show tha t the urbanization in growing "at an average rate of about 1 million additional acres a year "                            As we can see, USA’s land is used for specific purposes, for example golf courses and airports . The main occupant of the land is Cows. The 41% is used...

(Post 1) Sufficiently Creating Something Great for the Wildlife

Image
By: Casey Williams    We use land for so many things and one thing I find the most interesting is managing food plots for deer hunting. This is using land in a positive way in order to gain big mature whitetail deer and even other wildlife. Giving them the proper nutrients they need to survive and to live a healthy life is a very important thing to me. Land to me is very important for the environment to have a healthy and safe place to have habitats.    This article states how to successfully have wildlife food plots. This step by step guide will help you navigate your way and your land into a successful habitat, great food source for the wildlife and will tell you what food plots have to have in order to produce. It will talk about the preparation that will need to be done in order to start the food plot. Everything you need to know will be in this article and it will make you successful.   Animals need a great food source in order to keep a healt...

The Strip Away of Environmental Protections- Blog 1

Image
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/22/climate/trump-environment-water.html When president was assigned to office he made a commitment to repeal President Barack Obama “Waters Of The United States” In January 2020 president Trump has decided to take away environmental protections. Environmental protections are rules that had protected the wetlands, streams, and groundwater. President Trump felt the regulations of the law were ridiculous so he produced a new one to replace the other and called it the “Navigable Waters Protection Rule” which will help him during his impeachment trial because it will help him get rule landowners to vote for him. Rule landowners would vote for him because the old rule had hindered many farmers, fossil fuel producers and real estate developers.Ever since President Trumps new role have been put into action farmers has been against E.P.A ( Environmental Protection Agency). On the other hand it could harm his impeachment trail because it will turn the environm...

Blog Post 1: Green Building

Image
Nia Mallette When talking about land, there are a variety of topics you can talk about based on how it affects it the environment. For example, you can talk about growing foods, building cities,  roads, urban sprawl, forests, wilderness, wildfires, agriculture, our food supply, food security, GMOs, CFOs, effects of agriculture, like pesticide and fertilizer run-off, human health issues related to food and the list goes on. However, a big thing I see in the world today related to land is building cities, roads, and buildings. As we all know, this can be very detrimental to the environment and to our health as a whole. To build cities, and roads you have to cut down trees, and this is cutting down our oxygen and releasing all the CO2 the trees hold, out into the air. Because of the necessities of humans, saying we have to stop building cities and roads is extreme and unrealistic. However, based on green sustainability news article, they have discovered a way to implement  “Gre...
