Air pollution is a major cause of premature death and disease, and is the single largest environmental health risk in Europe. Heart disease and stroke are the most common reasons for premature death attributable to air pollution, followed by lung diseases and lung cancer.

Air pollution is a complex mix of several pollutants, so the effects attributed to one pollutant may be partly caused by some others. The most harmful pollutant is nitrogen oxide.

A health risk assessment involves three steps:
- Assess the exposure of the population to the pollutants in question
- Estimate the health risk associated with that exposure
- Estimate the uncertainty of the calculation.
